The Supreme Court of India, established on 28 January 1950 under the Constitution of India, replaced the Federal Court of India and serves as the apex judicial authority in the country. It has the power of constitutional review and acts as the final court of appeal. The Court comprises 34 judges, including the Chief Justice, with several women currently serving on the bench. To become an advocate of the Supreme Court, one must first be enrolled with a State Bar Council, practise for at least five years, and pass the Advocate-on-Record (AOR) examination conducted by the Court. Only AORs are authorised to file cases directly in the Supreme Court. The present Chief Justice of India is the Justice (51st CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, who assumed office on 11 November 2024. He is scheduled to retire on 13 May 2025 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65, as stipulated by the Constitution of India.
