KWOHR PRESS RELEASE

PRESS RELEASE
9th March 2025

The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) firstly would like to express deep sorrow over the tragic passing of Mr. Lalgouthang Singsit, who was a victim of brutal actions by central para-military forces today at Keithelmanbi Military Colony (KMC), Kangpokpi District. The KWOHR condemns the lack of empathy from the government, which could have prevented this loss if they had understood the plight of the Kuki community. The KWOHR offers their condolences and solidarity to the grieving family and pray for the strength they need during this difficult time.

The KWOHR also strongly opposes the "Free Movement" programme that has been imposed by the authorities in the state of Manipur. The group views the programme as a reflection of the government's indifference and failure to address the struggles of the Kuki people, who have endured hardships for nearly two years.

The KWOHR criticizes the attempt to bring normalcy without addressing the root causes of the ongoing issues, calling it a populist move that sacrifices the Kuki community. We argue that such actions are unacceptable in any democratic society that values humanity.

The KWOHR also would like to highlight the failure of authorities to address the law-and-order situation in the valley districts of Manipur, pointing out that weapons looted from the state's armory have been used in attacks on Kuki villagers. The KWOHR denounces the claims that the situation has been addressed, stressing that the surrendering of a few assault rifles does not resolve the deeper issues of lawlessness, violence, and the ongoing threat to Kuki lives.

The KWOHR further criticizes the President's rule in Manipur, calling it a public relations strategy designed to cover up the injustices faced by the Kuki people and accuses the government of erasing the Kuki community's suffering from the historical narrative of Manipur and India. Despite this, the KWOHR asserts that the Kuki people will continue to stand as a reminder of the failure of both the Modi and Biren governments.

The brutal actions of the central military forces against peaceful women protesters are condemned, with KWOHR pointing out that, while the Kuki community may be small, they possess the solidarity and strength to resist oppression, just as they did during the struggle against the British Empire.

Finally, the KWOHR would like to reiterate its stance that a political solution must precede peace in the region, and it will not accept anything less than the fulfilment of the political demands of the Kuki people in the form of Union Territory with Legislatures.
