Dr. Felix Wilfred, a renowned theologian, scholar, and author, passed away last night in Chennai at the age of 77.
According to the website of the Asian Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies, Dr. Wilfred was the Founder-Director of the Asian Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies and a former Professor at the University of Madras, Chennai.
His academic contributions extended internationally, serving as a visiting
professor at several prestigious institutions, including the University of
Frankfurt, University of Munster, University of Nijmegen, Boston College, East
Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila, and Fudan University in China. As an ICCR
Professor, he held the Chair of Indian Studies at Trinity College, Dublin,
Ireland. Dr. Wilfred was also scheduled to deliver the esteemed Duffy Lectures
at Boston College in early 2023.
A prolific author, Dr. Wilfred wrote numerous books and articles. Among his
significant works, he edited The Oxford Handbook of Asian Christianity
(2014). His latest book, Religious Identities and the Global South: Porous
Borders and Novel Paths (2021), was published by Palgrave Macmillan. Dr.
Wilfred also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of
Asian Christianity, a peer-reviewed journal published by Brill, The
Netherlands, and indexed in SCOPUS.
His passing marks the loss of a deeply influential figure in global theology
and academia, whose legacy will continue to inspire many.
