Kanyakumari: EXPLORING the ROOTS of FAITH & HISTORY

KANYAKUMARI, known in Tamil as “Kanniya Kumari” (கன்னியா குமாரி), meaning “The Virgin Maiden,” is steeped in fascinating legends. According to Tamil mythology, she is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, who undertook penance to marry Lord Shiva. It is said that the wedding was arranged, but due to a divine trick, Lord Shiva did not arrive at the appointed time. Heartbroken and humiliated, the goddess abandoned the idea of marriage and vowed to remain a virgin forever.

In her grief, she scattered all the food and ornaments prepared for the wedding. The uncooked rice and grains turned into the white sands of Kanyakumari’s beaches, while her ornaments turned into stones. To this day, visitors to the Kumari Amman Temple can see the remnants of this legend, with stones resembling grains of rice near the temple. This mythological tale adds a sense of divine mystique to the already breathtaking beauty of Kanyakumari, where the ocean waves carry whispers of her eternal presence.

The town of Kanyakumari is named after her and is home to the famous Kumari Amman Temple, where devotees and tourists alike come to seek blessings and learn the fascinating story of the goddess. Her eternal presence is also linked to the scenic beauty of Kanyakumari, where the land, sea, and sky meet in a mesmerizing confluence.

In Kanyakumari, the LAND, SEA, and SKY come together, testifying to the creative power and sovereign majesty of God, who holds all creation in perfect harmony.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Dr. A. Rayappan Issac, Principal of KKTC, for embodying the love and grace of Christ in your acts of kindness toward us. May God, in His infinite mercy, richly bless you and reward your faithfulness with His abundant favour.
