The MUTTOM LIGHTHOUSE, located near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, is a picturesque coastal landmark that has guided mariners since its establishment in 1882.
Perched on rugged cliffs with breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea, the lighthouse stands 110 feet above sea level and features a striking white, black and red design.
Known for its historical significance and scenic surroundings, Muttom Lighthouse attracts tourists seeking panoramic views, especially at sunrise and sunset.
According to the Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships (Ministry of Shipping, Govt of India), the land for the Muttom Lighthouse was generously donated by the King of Travancore.
Originally, a 20-meter-high octagonal stone tower, painted white, was built on Muttom Hill and became operational in September 1875.
To enhance visibility, a
taller, 14.6-meter stone tower with black and white horizontal bands was
constructed in the same location, and the new light began operation on January
1, 1883.
Situated about 17 km from Nagercoil, 32 km from Kanyakumari, and 73 km from Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), this iconic lighthouse offers panoramic views from its accessible points.
From the top, we can see the breathtaking views of the serene sea, magnificent
churches, and local homes.
Moreover, Muttom Lighthouse serves both the country and the fishing community
by providing timely information and warnings about approaching severe weather.
While visiting this stunning hilly landscape, it is difficult to come out, as
the breathtaking natural beauty has a way of capturing our heart. The
enchanting views and serene atmosphere create unforgettable memories that
linger long after our visit.

It’s easy to lose in the charm of this place, making it a truly special experience that will stay forever.
In Tamil, “Muttom” (முட்டம்) generally means “tip”, “end”, or “corner”. It can refer to a point of land, such as a cape or headland, often where the land meets the sea, which aligns with the coastal location of Muttom in Kanyakumari.
Oh! Almost forgot to mention Raj Sekhar, who tirelessly worked throughout the night at the lighthouse and generously shared valuable information with us, providing eye-opening insights on 30 October 2024. Thank you, Raj Sekhar!
Hence, 30 October 2024, will be a date to remember forever.
