WHILE TRAVELLING by train from Kanyakumari to Trivandrum, we decided to explore some notable sights in the city. It was our first visit, and as soon as we exited the train station, two male auto drivers approached us. However, communication proved challenging -- they didn’t speak English, and we didn’t know Malayalam.
Fortunately, a third auto driver, a woman, came to our aid, showing us a printed sheet listing local tourist spots. She spoke a little English, and we managed to understand each other. She initially quoted a package price of ₹2000 for a city tour. After some bargaining and a brief disagreement, we settled on ₹800 for four destinations.
Her calm demeanour and steady driving made the
journey pleasant. Along the way, she pointed out landmarks like Travancore Mall
and the airport, using simple head gestures. The landscape was captivating,
with rows of coconut trees lining the roads, creating a scenic view.
Our first stop was a boating service. The office staff warmly welcomed us, offering seats as he explained nearby attractions. However, the cost -- ₹2500 per head -- was far beyond our budget. As we politely excused ourselves, a young man approached us, insisting we shouldn’t miss the beautiful island. He offered to lower the price to ₹1800 for an hour but finally agreed to ₹1200 after some negotiation.
The boat ride itself was thrilling -- our first time on such a vessel. The calm waters, bordered by dense coconut groves, provided a serene and picturesque experience. Floating peacefully, we felt a deep connection to nature.
One highlight was Golden Sand Beach, named for its dazzling golden sands. Small shops sold coconut juice and warm cold drinks under the scorching sun. Walking along the beach, we reached a marked boundary warning tourists not to cross due to the strong, potentially dangerous waves of the Indian Ocean.
Another unique sight was Elephant Rock, a natural formation resembling an elephant sitting on the sand, complete with a trunk. We also passed floating restaurants, tourist cottages, and Ayurveda massage centers, adding charm to the island’s offerings. Birds chirped merrily on the branches, enhancing the idyllic atmosphere.
The boat sailed around a meditation centre crowned with a visible cross. Beneath it was a prayer hall open to anyone seeking a moment of quiet reflection. We also ventured near the Tamil Nadu border before heading back.
Poorva Island was a treasure trove of beauty and tranquility. Its serene waters, lush greenery, and unique landmarks made for an unforgettable journey -- a testament to the natural splendour of Trivandrum.
As we approached the auto, we found our auto driver waking up from a short nap after having her lunch, courtesy of the island service provider. It turns out that any auto driver who brings visitors to the island is treated to a meal worth ₹200 as a gesture of appreciation.
With a warm smile, she asked, “How was your
visit? How was your visit?”
We responded enthusiastically, “Fantastic!”
Her smile grew wider, and we exchanged friendly
grins before she started the auto, ready to take us to our next destination.
