Press Statement on the Koutruk Incident
5th September, 2024
We, the Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills are deeply troubled by the recent events in Koutruk, where it has been reported that a drone equipped with an explosive device was deployed by members of the Meitei Commandos along with their militants outfit to attack the Kuki village volunteers. The drone, which failed due to a battery malfunction, was subsequently used in a blame game, with unfounded accusations being made against the Kuki volunteers for deploying the device themselves.
This deliberate distortion of facts serves only to fuel further tension and violence in an already fragile situation. Such actions do not contribute to peace or justice but rather deepen the divisions and mistrust between the Meetei and Kuki-Zo. Attempts to manipulate the narrative in favor of one group only prolong the suffering and uncertainty faced by all.
We are particularly concerned about the impartiality of the investigation and actions taken by the DGP of Manipur, who seems to consistently back the Meitei majority while turning a blind eye to the burning of over 300 Kuki villages and other atrocities faced by the minority community. Selective justice and a biased approach to law enforcement will not resolve the conflict but will only perpetuate it.
Kuki Inpi urged the authorities to conduct a truly independent and impartial investigation into the Koutruk incident and other acts of violence in the region. Justice cannot be served if investigations and actions are skewed toward one side. Peace will only be achievable when the law is applied fairly and without prejudice, and when all parties are held equally accountable for their actions.
The current approach of selective action and biased blame will only exacerbate the conflict. We must commit ourselves to a path of truth and justice to heal the wounds of our communities.
