In 1922, Ukhrul Sub-Divisional Officer LL. Peters was recommended for cash reward of Rs. 1000 by Political Agent of Manipur for passing in Kuki Language
Considering the power & influence of Kukis in the hills including Ukhrul, knowledge of Kuki language was recognised as an important tool in governing the Hills. Tangkhuls whose migration to India continues even today were considered 'insignificant tribe'.
