We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Khrieleno Terhüjah, one of the most esteemed alumni of United Theological College (UTC), Bengaluru.
A visionary ahead of her time, Khrieleno was the first female student at UTC, enrolling in the Bachelor of Divinity (BD) programme from 1961 to 1965. Despite UTC’s status as the premier theological college in India, the institution had no facilities for female students, as theological education was then exclusively male. Undeterred, Khrieleno remained steadfast in her goal. In support, Prof. Dr. J.R. Chandran offered her a small storeroom, which served as both her room and kitchen.
From this humble corner at UTC, Khrieleno Terhüjah made history in 1966, becoming the first Indian woman to complete the BD programme.
Since that milestone, Khrieleno has been an enduring inspiration, paving the way for countless Indian women to engage in and contribute to theological education across India and beyond.
Khrieleno Terhüja passed away at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) in Dimapur, Nagaland on the night of March 5th after a prolonged illness.
Born on May 21, 1933, Khrieleno Terhüja was married to the late Rüüngukho Terhuja and is survived by three sons and ten grandchildren.
Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this time of loss. May they find peace, comfort, and love in their memories of her, and may her soul rest in eternal peace.
~ UTC
