MORAVIAN CHURCH Demands JUSTICE for KUKI-ZO Victims of Manipur VIOLENCE

Leh, Ladakh, 24 July 2023: The Moravian Mission Welfare Society, Leh, has expressed deep concern over the recent ethnic violence in Manipur, particularly condemning the brutal assault on two Kuki-Zo tribal Christian women. In a memorandum addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, the organisation called for justice and urgent action to support the affected communities.

The letter, signed by Chairman Sonam Parvez, highlighted the horrors of the incident, where two women were paraded naked and assaulted by a mob. The church condemned the inhumanity of the attack and the broader violence in Manipur, which has persisted for over eighty days, displacing nearly 50,000 people and leading to the destruction of 350 churches, seminaries, and schools.

In solidarity with the victims, the Ladakh Moravian Mission Church organised a Solidarity March on 24 July 2023, advocating for justice and raising awareness against acts of violence and oppression. During the march, the church took out a rally in Leh, strongly criticizing the central and state governments for their failure to control the violence and protect the affected communities. The demonstrators demanded immediate intervention to restore peace and ensure justice for the victims.

The church urged the people of Ladakh and the Christian community to join their call for justice. It demanded justice and accountability for the perpetrators of violence, support for the affected tribal community in their recovery, and increased awareness to prevent violence against marginalized communities. The church also called for efforts to promote tolerance and understanding among diverse groups in Manipur. It also appealed to the government to assist in rebuilding Christian places of worship, seminaries, and schools, provide aid for the displaced, and support the reconstruction of burnt homes.

The Moravian Church in Leh reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the victims and ensuring that their voices are heard. The memorandum calls on the Indian government to take immediate steps to restore peace and rehabilitate those impacted by the ongoing violence.
