The highly anticipated knock-out round of the ongoing Zou Gal Memorial Shield 2023 began today and the two matchday fixtures produced a result reminiscent of classical knock-out round encounters as heavyweights New Lamka YC and D.Phailien FC prevailed through to the quarter-final with narrow win at Lamka Public Ground, Churachandpur.
_In today's first knock-out round match between FC Zotal and D.Phailien FC, both sides were unable to produce spark and entertainment early on largely due to intense heat and scorching temperature but the game came to life midway through the first-half when D.Phailien FC skipper Paotinmang Guite finished off a swift counter-attack with him slotting home a rebound after his initial attempt was denied by the FC Zotal goalkeeper. With the start of the second-half, FC Zotal showed better character and a better zeal for goal and after Costa Thangtinlen spurned one glorious chance for FC Zotal, the NEROCA FC striker gifted his side a lifeline when he earned a penalty after being brought down inside the penalty area with Thangminlen Misao making no mistake from the spot kick to put make the score 1-1. After that equalizer, D.Phailien FC raided FC Zotal's goal a number of times and the closest of which was a brilliant free-kick by substitute Joulien Neitham, which struck the crossbar after taking deviation from the FC Zotal goalkeeper and the match ended 1-1. In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, D.Phailien FC goalkeeper Lamgoulian Tungnung made two fine saves to help his side to a 4-3 win that secured them a quarter-final slot._
The day's second knock-out round match between New Lamka YC and ZSP Imphal Block was of dramatic one with New Lamka YC making a bright start but ZSP Imphal Block produced an exciting end to the match. It appeared the game was finished and sealed just inside the opening 22 mintues as double-strike from Basanta Singh and a clinical Siamminthang Valte's finish put New Lamka YC 3-0 up but Singdoulien Khongsai gave lifeline for ZSP Imphal Block with a fine strike in first-half stoppage time. The second-half saw ZSP Imphal Block producing some fine moves in their bid to clinch an unlikely comeback but they were unable to get the breakthrough and after both sides were reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of New Lamka YC's Thanglalven and ZSP Imphal Block's Khan for unsporting behaviour, Vanlalmuon reduced the deficit for ZSP Imphal Block with a 77th-minute stike but it was too late to launch comeback and New Lamka YC emerged 3-2 winners to enter quarter-final.
_New Lamka YC and D. Phailien FC will clash in the quarter-final on 10th March._
