BRIEF HISTORY OF THANGKHAL TRIBE

For introduction: Dear brothers and sisters,  the Thangkhal Cultural Troupe wishes you a very Happy and warm KUT chibai!

(1) THANGKHAL TRIBE belongs to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi family of Pu ZO origin.  They have their own dialect, culture,  custom,  and tradition.  They were predominantly found in the southern part of Churachandpur district,  Manipur.

(2) In the olden days,  the Thangkhals are known for their bravery and sharp-shootings.  They are headhunters,  and hunting 'head' is considered as the highest bravery acts amongst the Thangkhals.

(3) The livelihood of the Thangkhals depend on jhum cultivation. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people.

(4) The Thangkhals, in the olden days,  were Animism. Today the Thangkhals are now all professing Christianity.  Today,  they are best known for peace-loving,  and hospitality towards others.

(5) The traditional dance they performed is called THANGKHAL PUPA LAAM.  These Young GENTS and LADIES dressed in Thangkhal traditional attire, called Thangkhal Puanlaisan.

(6) The most popular slogan of the Thangkhal Tribe is Our Dialect is Our Identity
