Around 9:00 pm of Saturday, 6 April 2019, a group of youth numbering about ten who were ferried in two vehicles barged into the residence of Mr. S. Genlunthang Vaiphei, located at Red Cross Lane, Churachandpur, and immediately started damaging valuable items like computer printers, etc. without any provocation.
In the altercation that ensued, the attackers who tried to mask their identity, brutally assaulted Miss Didim Vaiphei, and also Miss Doisiammawi. The former had to be rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
Miss Doisiammawi is an executive member of Zillai (Vaiphei Students' Association) General Headquarters, and the organisation is deeply shocked that the attackers would resort to kicking, punching and terrorising womenfolks, which certainly was not an act of bravery.
The horrific incident of men laying hands on women deserves nothing but condemnation, and Zillai is extremely disheartened to note that Churachandpur district should continue to witness and experience violence and intimidation in different forms, and its perpetrators allowed to roam free.
The Zillai fervently appeals to one and all to respect the dignity of women, and to teach our youths the lost path of peace and love, and not to misuse and misguide them for short-lived narrow gains. The District Administration is also urged to beef up security and man the streets and roads of the town round the clock to ensure safety of all people.
