It
may be mentioned that Thangkhal Tribe Council is the highest apex body of the
Thangkhal peoples living in Manipur, northeast India. It was formed as the Thangkhal
Peoples’ Organisation (TPO) wayback in 1978. TPO has been rechristened as the
Thangkhal Tribe Council (TTC) at its Annual Assembly held in Simte Inn, Lamka
on 20th December 2017.
The
Thangkhal Youth Organisation came into being in 1978, Thangkhal Sinlai
Pawlpi in 1987, and the first church Thangkhal
Christian Association was established in 1981.
Remarkably,
the New Testament (Bible) in Thangkhal dialect was released in 2010.
The Thangkhals have their own tradition, customs and dialect. Though they were struggling to achieve ‘tribe recognition’ from the state government, they remained as unrecognized tribe and marginalized. The young-and-old alike have been constantly cherishing to attain the ‘recognition’ one day.
