NEW DELHI, JULY 31, 2015: A team of North-East's social activists met Ms Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Govt of NCT of Delhi at her office in New Delhi today.
Representation on he plight of Women from the North East of India in Delhi and suggestion of remedial/corrective steps to DCW was done by the NE team including Dr Alana Golmei, General Secretary, Northeast Support Centre & Helpline (NESCH), Mr ID Gil, Lawyer for Northeast people, Mr David Boyes, Convener, North East India Forum Against Racism (NEIFAR), and Mr J Maivio, Vice President, Northeast India Welfare Society.
"We have a positive discussion with the new chairperson Swati Maliwal today. She responded that all the points in our letter make a lot of sense. She said to implement all these will take a month as these needs further consultation with larger NE community," said Dr Golmei.
Ms Maliwal has proposed for meeting with larger NE groups including activists, NGO, Lawyers, student's leaders, professionals, etc especially to - set up a Committee for NE at DCW, appoint female NE lawyers, regular meeting with NE representatives, Conduct study on situation of NE women, the team members stated.
The womenfolk from the North East of India, due to their distinct physical feature, appearance and range of other peculiar differences in language and culture, are particularly vulnerable to crimes which are most often, sexual in nature. Others types of atrocities against the womenfolk are cheating by landlord and brokers, physical assault, eve-teasing, non-payment of salary or non-existence of proper paper work of employment and subsequent exploitation thereof. The list goes on.
