Defending champion Hmar FC draws Hornbill FC in the Opening

           8th North East Tamchon Football Trophy kicks off in Delhi

The 8th North-East Tamchon Football Tournament 2014 kicked off amidst the enthusiast crowd here in Dr Ambedkar Stadium on Tuesday evening (November 18, 2014) in a glittering ceremony, which was graced by Ranjit Thomas, Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh and Alok Kumar, IPS, Special Commissioner of Delhi Police as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.

The tournament has been organised by the Tangkhal Naga Society Delhi (TNSD) under the theme “Fairplay, Unity, Friendship and Understanding”.


The much awaited mega event began with flag hoisting by the chief guest, which was followed by the theme song ‘Go Light Your World’ sung by the choir comprised of five tribes viz. Hmar, Poumei, Rongmei, Paite and Tangkhul.

 

Before the event kicked off special numbers were presented by Blending Chords, Chochon Varah and Christy Vunggohching. The singers rendered soulful songs. The Pung-Cholom dance performed by Manipuri Cultural Troupe and the Bamboo Dance by Hmar Cultural Troupe were an eye-opener for the crowd.

Addressing the gathering TNSD president (officiating) Dr Yuiringam Awungshi said that the tournament intended to bring all the North East in one platform to show cultural, dances and songs apart from football.



The chief guest Ranjit Thomas praised the organizing committee and encouraged the northeasterners saying that North East will be the Jewel of India in the coming days.

 

Yugal Kishore Sharma, President of Delhi Dynamos FC and his team attended the event. “Delhi Dynamos will be associating with the winner of Tamchon tournament,” said Sharma. Delhi Dynamos FC has begun sponsoring the defending Hmar FC some months ago. The president promised to sponsor the team champion  in this tournament.



A total of 16 teams from the Northeast states will lock horns in the tournament till November 29.

The winner will take home the champion trophy along with cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs, medals and certificates. The trophy can be owned by any team who wins consecutively for three years. The runners-up will be awarded medals and certificates along with a cash prize of Rs 3 lakhs and the third place team will get Rs 2 lakhs.

 

In memory of late RN Tamchon, ACP, Delhi Police, the Tangkhul Naga Society Delhi is organising this tournament every year since 2007. RN (Ramnganing) Tamchon was a DANIPS officer, who hailed from Khadang village in Ukhrul district of Manipur. Until his death, he served as Additional Commissioner of Police in Delhi for nine years.

 

Thamchon, unfortunately passed away in 2006 leaving behind his beloved wife, Valleygreen and two little kids – boy and girl. Soon after his death, his wife joined Delhi Police in the rank of Sub Inspector (SI). Both Thamchon and Valleygreen married in 1997.

 

After the sixteen participating team took oath administered by the defending champion Hmar FC captain Ngurneilal, the chief guest, guest of honour and officials paid an inspection of the players of Hmar FC and Hornbill FC (Nagaland). 

The inaugural match of Hmar FC and Hornbill FC finally kicked off at around 7.25pm. In the first half, Hmar FC dominated the play. However Hmar FC could not lead goal. Inspite of many attempts made by the Hmar players, no goal strike the net. But something changed in the 20th minute, when Akhonmei (Jersey No. 7) of Hornbill netted one goal. This led to one-zero in the first half.

 

In the second half the Hornbill played stronger but the Hmars still managed to control the ball. The Hmar players has missed four sure-goals, says James Sanate, Coach of Hmar FC. Though the Hmars attacked Hornbill side, they could not turned into goal. The Hornbill players has also missed three-four shots. Inside D-box, Hornbill players were very dangerous. They, many a times, almost turned the difficult passings into scoring. Hornbill also missed three-four shots.

In the 51st minute Samuel R. Hmar (Jersey No. 4) strike the ball with his right leg passing from right corner that passed into the goal which the Hornbill goalie could not block it away. The goal equalized the scoring till the end.
