New Delhi, Sep 5, 2014: Dr. Alana Golmei, General Secretary of the North East Support Centre & Helpline in Delhi, was honored with the prestigious ALL Grassroots Women of the Decade Achievers Award at the Leela Palace in New Delhi on Thursday, 25 September 2014. This recognition celebrates her efforts in establishing the Northeast Support Centre and a 24/7 Helpline aimed at preventing harassment, discrimination, and abuse faced by individuals from Northeast India, particularly women living in metropolitan areas.
The award was presented by M. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, who attended the event as the chief guest, along with Dr. Harbeen Arora, Global Chairperson of ALL.
Assocham Ladies League honored 35 other exemplary women achievers, including Meera Munda, social activist; Mehvish Mushtaq, the first Kashmiri woman app developer; Anar Patel, founder of Gramshree; Chhavi Rajawat, the first woman Sarpanch in Rajasthan who left her corporate job for the role; Meenalochani Raghunathan of GMR Varalakshmi Foundation for CSR; Uma Chigurupati of Hyderabad Heritage Foundation; Hiresha Verma of Dehradun, a social entrepreneur helping women in Uttarakhand rebuild their lives after the floods through a mushroom business; Dr. Sailakshmi Balijepalli of Ekam Foundation, which works for zero child mortality; Valli Annamalai from Madurai, known for curbing female infanticide; and many others.
During the ceremony, Dr. Golmei expressed her gratitude, stating, “Facing racism in one’s own country is the worst nightmare that anyone can face. I appreciate ALL for acknowledging our support centre and rewarding our small initiative to help remove this scourge.”
Yishey Doma Bhutia, a prolific journalist and writer from Sikkim, emphasized the importance of fostering a connection between the Northeast and mainland India, calling the award a significant step toward that goal.

Dr. Golmei has been dedicated to assisting distressed individuals from Northeast states in Delhi and the NCR region since the inception of the NE Helpline. Bruce K. Thangkhal, media in charge of the North East Support Centre & Helpline, described her as “the sister of the NE Helpline team and the mother of NE youths in Delhi,” expressing pride in her achievements and commitment to the community.
