Closing Ceremony of the 26th Sikkim State Badminton Championship 2014

THE CLOSING CEREMONY of the 26th Sikkim State Badminton Championship 2014 took place here in Indoor Gymnasium Hall, Namchi on Sunday, 21 September 2014. The five-day event, which began on September 17, saw participation from 370 players across the state.

The Chief Guest for the ceremony was Mr. R.B. Subba, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, HRDD, and Law Legislative Parliamentary Affairs, accompanied by Mr. Binod Rai, Adviser for Water Security and the PHE Department; Mr. C. Zangpo, Tourism Secretary; Mr. D.B. Thapa, President of the Badminton Association of Sikkim; Mr. Durga Rai, President of the Badminton Association of Namchi; Mr. Lobsang Lama, Vice Chairman of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA); along with various HODs, principals, teachers, and students.

Mr. R.B. Subba congratulated both the winners and participants, announcing plans to provide a badminton coach for all districts to promote the sport among youth. He emphasized the importance of sports in Sikkim and shared success stories of local athletes who have excelled at the national level, encouraging young players to follow in their footsteps and bring pride to the state. He also highlighted various government schemes and programs available to help young athletes enhance their skills.

Additionally, Mr. Subba informed the attendees about the upcoming 6th edition of the Late L. D. Kazi Memorial Gold Cup 2014, which will be organized by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs in collaboration with the Chakung Sports Association. This year, the tournament will be an inter-school event, allowing all senior secondary schools in the state to participate with players under the age of 17.

The President of the Badminton Association of Sikkim expressed gratitude to everyone involved in making the 26th Sikkim State Badminton Championship a resounding success. He noted the significant progress in badminton development and encouraged athletes to take advantage of the various state-sponsored schemes in sports.

On the final day of the championship, competitions were held for the Boys Under 16 Singles, Men’s Singles, and the Chung Chung Bhutia Memorial Trophy for Veterans (40+). The winners included Pranish Rai, Tshering Pintso Sherpa, Rajan Maskey, and Sajan Subba, respectively. The Chief Guest distributed trophies to the winners and runners-up in various categories during the ceremony.
