Namchi, 25th June, 2014: “Ten
Minutes to Earth” was observed today in South Sikkim at the District Zilla
Panchayat Bhawan, Namchi. The event, organised by the Forest, Environment and
Wildlife Management Department, saw participation from various dignitaries,
including DC (South) Mr Prabhakar Verma, SDZP Upadhakshya Ms D M Baraily, ADM
(South) Mr Kapil Meena, DFO (T) Mr M K Rai, ACF (T) Ms Deepshika Sharma, ADC (Dev),
Namchi Ms Benu Gurung, DPO Ms Yangchen Tamang, as well as staff and officials
from the Forest, Irrigation, and RMD Departments, along with South District
Zilla Panchayat representatives. A plantation drive was conducted at the RMDD
premises in Namchi.
DC (South) emphasised the importance of the initiative, urging participants to ensure thorough follow-up every three months to guarantee the proper care and growth of the trees and flowers planted in their respective areas. He also highlighted the significance of the ‘Paryavaran Mahotsav’, with its three essential components: Cleanliness Drive, Awareness Campaign, and Plantation Drive, which are aimed at fostering collective responsibility among all participants.
Additionally, DFO (T) briefed the officials on
the key steps to be followed while carrying out the plantation drive in their
respective departments. He stressed the importance of executing a systematic
follow-up plan to nurture the plants and trees planted for years to come.
Government departments such as IPR, HRDD,
Irrigation, Health, and the Namchi Municipal Council, along with the Namchi
Gram Vikas Kendra and school students, also participated in the ‘Ten Minutes to
Earth’ programme. Flowering and medicinal plants, ornamental tree saplings, and
local species such as pine and fir were planted during the event.
