SHILLONG LAJONG secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Royal Wahingdoh FC in a lively Under-19 (North East Zone Qualifiers) I-League encounter at the JN Stadium, Shillong, on Tuesday (Feb 18). Captain Redeem Tlang netted the decisive goal, ensuring his team claimed all three points.
Lajong's Shaiborlang
Kharpan, who scored twice in their opening match against Rangdajied United, was
forced off early due to injury and was replaced by Shanbor Jyrwa. Coach Alison
Kharsyntiew made just one change to his starting lineup, introducing
Zodingliana.
The opening minutes
saw both teams struggle for dominance, but the game sprang to life in the 20th
minute when Lajong gained possession and began applying intense pressure. The
breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Redeem Tlang skillfully chested a
cross from Bipin Singh into the net, giving Lajong a well-deserved lead.
The Junior Reds nearly doubled their advantage in the 35th minute when Rupert Nongrum made an excellent run down the left flank and delivered a well-timed pass to Zodingliana, whose shot narrowly missed the target.
Royal Wahingdoh
found their rhythm in the second half, creating a few opportunities, but
Lajong's defense stood firm, repelling every attempt. Determined to find an
equalizer, Wahingdoh pressed forward, increasing their presence in the box.
Their best chance came in the 80th minute when goalkeeper Nitin Meel was
tested, but the experienced U-19 custodian made a crucial save to preserve
Lajong’s lead.
The Junior Reds held firm until the final whistle, maintaining their position at the top of the group table with six points. Royal Wahingdoh, with three points from two matches, sits in second place.
Shillong Lajong
will next face Rangdajied United on February 26 at the JN Stadium, Shillong.
