Imphal, March 13 2013[Sangai Express]-- Marathon hunger striker Irom Sharmila Chanu has been re-arrested by a team of Porompat Police at around 6 pm today.
Sharmila, who has been on a fast since November 2000 to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, was freed with the end of her jail term yesterday.
Soon after the Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East issued the directive for her release, Sharmila along with a large number of her supporters marched towards the temporary fasting shed at Porompat and continued her stir there.
At around 12.30 pm today a medical team of JNIMS rushed to the shed and tried to conduct a medical check-up of the anti-AFSPA campaigner.
However, as Sharmila refused to have a medical check-up and treatment, she was re-arrested at around 6 pm today by a team of Porompat Police Station.
Prior to her arrest, Sharmila told The Sangai Express that black laws including the highly draconian AFSPA are imposed in order to suppress the rights of a particular people by another group of people.
Maintaining that abolition of such laws is her wish, Sharmila said that she would continue her campaign until the black laws are repealed.
Responding to a query regarding her 41st birthday which falls on March 14, Sharmila said that there would be no mental satisfaction and rest until her objective is fulfilled.
She said, "I am thankful to those who present gifts on my birthday.
However, I am sorry that I will not be able to accept the gifts as I am yet to fulfil my objective" .
On the other hand, Sharmila's brother Irom Singhajit said that their mother is still unmoved with her stand not to meet Sharmila until her daughter's objective is achieved.
It may be mentioned that Sharmila started her marathon hunger strike against controversial AFSPA in November 2000 after Assam Rifles soldiers gunned down 10 civilians at Malom.
